WOW Telfees

Numeracy is a foundational skill that underpins academic success, economic participation, and everyday decision-making. The WOW Telfees wants to empower learners and teachers in mental arithmetic and make numeracy fun, accessible, and achievable. The vision is to grow the WOW Telfees into a national flagship event that empowers young learners with confidence and competence in numeracy. Over the next three years, the WOW Telfees will be extended to learners in Grade 4 to 7, in line with the emphasis in developing fundamental numeracy skills in the intermediary phase. Objectives are: (a) to expand participation of schools, prioritising inclusion of under-resourced and rural schools; (b) to develop engaging and age-appropriate mental arithmetic challenges, aligned with the national curriculum; (c) to train educators by offering workshops and toolkits to help teachers integrate Telfees activities into their classrooms and build a community of practice; (d) to foster partnerships by collaborating with the provincial education departments where the WOW Telfees takes place, and secure sponsorships and funding to ensure sustainability and scalability; and (e) to monitor impact by tracking learner performance, confidence, and engagement and use data to refine programming and demonstrate value to stakeholders.
