WOW (Words Open Worlds), hosted by Stellenbosch University, has been presenting the largest spelling competition in the country for 16 years. In 2025 the WOW Spelfees reached 469 000 learners from 1877 schools in 279 competitions in three languages. WOW must now focus on strengthening the quality, sustainability, and educational depth of the spelling competition. This means investing in teacher development, enhancing learner support, refining programme materials, and building stronger partnerships with schools and education departments. It also involves evaluating the long-term impact of the programme and aligning it with broader literacy goals. Over the next three years WOW plans to expand the isiXhosa spelling competition.
